The heat barely subsided from their “Knife Life Death” opus, the Swedish d-beat masters are back and more feral than ever with “Howl From Underground”. WOLFBRIGADE is not the kind of band you expect a lot of changes or reinvention from. While that would be a detriment to most bands, for these guys it is a strength. They are the absolute masters of this pounding yet melancholy style of music…the only way they can evolve is to become angrier, heavier and more filled with rage.
Mission accomplished! “Knife Life Death” was a killer album itself and “Howl From Underground” ups the ante all the way around. WOLFBRIGADE consider themselves a punk band at their core and that’s what this. Thrashers, death metallers and lovers of extreme music in general will be able to feel the power behind the militaristic drumming, the wolfishly simple but catchy riffs and the angry bellowing of Micke Dahl, who sounds like a guy who’s had it up to HERE and is ready to strike out at the criminal idiots in charge of everything.
12 tracks in 30 quickly evaporating minutes can be found here and while the anger and energy is uniform, there are a few tracks that stand out to me. “Doomrunner”, the title track and “Born To Rot” make for an especially potent triad. Later in the album, “Headhunting” and “Cosmic Meatgrinder” are an equally caustic duo. But the variance between tracks is miniscule. Again, a problem for most, an advantage for WOLFBRIGADE. If you have yet to sample the lupine rage of these guys, “Howl From Underground” is a great way to hop aboard and join the pack.
