MISCREANCE “Reminiscence”

“Reminiscence” is a very accurate album title because it will take you back to those glorious days of the early 90’s when technical death metal was becoming its own separate world…the days when ATHEIST, PESTILENCE and CORONER ruled the roost.
I really enjoyed MISCREANCE’s last album “Convergence” and “Reminiscence” is a logical follow-up that hits many of the same beats. These Frenchmen know how to play, that’s not up for debate! The record is bursting with smooth transitions of riff, jazzy guitar diversions and tricky drumming. But like “Convergence”, the band never get lost in their technicality. Everything sounds natural and makes sense, including a slick production which reminded me a lot of PESTILENCE’s “Testimony Of The Ancients”.
PESTILENCE can also be heard in the harsh, gummy sounding vocals of drummer Andrea Feltrin, who’s a dead ringer for Martin Van Drunen and Patrick Mameli. First song “Trait d’Union” starts with cool jazz fusion licks before accelerating into thrashy technical riffs. It’s a preview of the album as a whole, which is full of compact tracks all clocking in a under six minutes each. It’s nuts how much they are able to pack into tunes like “Synaptic Cortex Dissection” and “Symbiosis” without overdoing it. A lot of tech-death bands these days are so twitchy and over the top, there’s nothing to hang onto. Not so with MISCREANCE.
The band should have a better shot at notoriety now that they’re on Season Of Mist and I hope they stick around for a long time to remind us of what classic technical death-thrash should sound like!
