By Dr. Abner Mality
From the rotten bowels of Chile comes this crude and violent attack reeking of the elder days of grindcore and death metal. Longtime readers will know I have a soft spot for complete revolting trash when done with the proper feeling. ONSLAUGHT KOMMAND sure fit that bill. There is absolutely NOTHING refined about “Malignancy” and even those who like such brutes as SKELETAL REMAINS and CANNIBAL CORPSE may find this repellent.
That’s why I like it! 14 tracks of crude death grind in about a half hour. There’s a lot of the old Brazilian maniacs like SARCOFAGO, SEXTRASH and early KRISIUN here. To be honest, some of these tracks are very routine and the album might have worked better with 3 to 4 tracks amputated from it. The production is very much late 80’s demo quality and the drums sound like somebody threw some nuts and bolts in a washing machine. The vocals are absolutely the most echo-ey I’ve heard...you can almost feel metal walls vibrating in time with the growling vocals. In my book, this actually helps give “Malignancy” a creepy aura.
I won’t go over all the songs, but two in particular really stand out. “Morbid Warfare” has a great transition from blasting speed to a slow, gruesome riff that is just brilliant. And if “What’s In The Abyss?” had appeared on REPULSION’s “Horrified” album, it would have been neck and neck with “Black Breath” as best track. Some amazing skanky riffs on this track, I wish they would have used more of them. Elsewhere, you know what to expect from cuts with names like “Born To Be Deformed”, “Pervert Goat Kommand” and “Pissrot Humiliation”. This is just a pure piece of gutbucket death-grind trash and therefore recommended!
