More crossover thrash from North of the Border here...I dunno what’s in the poutine up there, but the Canadian thrash scene is absolutely on fire. THE SLIME are from Toronto and are a little bit different in that they lean more to the punk side of things than metal. You can hear a lot of DAYGLO ABORTIONS and GANG GREEN as well as the usual D.R.I. and NUCLEAR ASSAULT in their sound.
This gets called an “album” but at slightly more than 15 minutes, it’s closer to an EP. Let’s meet in the middle and call it a mini-album. Whatever you call it, this is fast, frantic and fun. Once the obscene sound bite intro ends, “Washout Revenge” blasts forth with speed punk with no rails. “Sludge” follows with the longest track...an epic 2:25! As might be expected, it’s slower and thicker like the name implies. The lead vocalist just yells and babbles his head off...no melody and no growling here, it’s pure punk fury.
In a mere 15 minutes, THE SLIME do an admirable job of giving each song its own feel. “Orange” and “Beyond Dead” are early D.R.I. type rippers barely topping the 30 second mark while “Russian Roulette” has a heavier, more ominous tone to it. “Nude” is one of my favorite tunes, with a kind of bouncy catchiness not found else where. “Bumblebee” wraps things up with a NUCLEAR ASSAULT style thrasher.
Nothing real profound here, yet THE SLIME are better at the crossover revival than many other acts working the same general area. Do the crab, baby!
