SATURNALIA TEMPLE

SATURNALIA TEMPLE     “Paradigm Call”

By Octopi Mills

Opening with a fuzzy, disharmonic piece called "Drakon" and following into "Revel in Dissidence", the album comes to interesting things, riding a distorted wave of negativity with some aspect of groove, and bouncy climbs. The title track, in a like manner, follows suit of the way found, and the stoner and doom metal feel is done in a manner different enough to warrant a sort of niche in the style of the music. Droning, trance-like strings of a down tuned frequency creates the sound with a hypnotic sort of phrasing. The vocals are done in a manner not out of fashion with the contemporary metal genres and are a bit bombastic. There is enough atmosphere and effect in the music to bring forth notions of musical black holes and burned-out voyages in reverse engineering.

"Black Smoke" is perfectly titled and smolders in the dark humors of comedy an in the crawl of strange ooze. Mostly hammered out in simple chords, it is done well for its own way of exploration an expression and it is of interest enough to stand out in a pile of releases caught in the doomer's net. Perhaps for some this Swedish sound may even be the catch of the day.
