If GORGUTS isn’t dissonant and wonky enough for you, here’s EVILYN to mangle your cerebellum beyond any hope of recovery. This band, featuring members of OBSCURA, MALIGNANCY and NORSE, has apparently set out to record an album without one iota of melody or one speck of orthodox guitar tuning. They take the house built by GORGUTS, ULCERATE and MESHUGGAH and burn it to the ground.
On one level, it is quite an accomplishment. This is dissonance past sanity, an unholy conglomeration of woozy, stumbling riffage, skittering drums and spider-fingered bass that lurches along like a just awoken zombie. For those interested in the mechanics of off-kilter death metal, “Mondestrunken” will keep you busy for a long time with its labyrinthine chaos.
Unfortunately, the memorability quotient here is zero. You won’t be humming the riffs or singing the vocal lines to any of this stuff. It will overload your brain to the point where nothing penetrates except the weirdness. Trying to describe individual songs is useless, as you’ve heard one, you’ve pretty much heard them all. Some are faster, some slower. Those are the only differences you will comprehend.
I’ve never been one for dissonant death metal, but there’s something about what EVILYN have done here that is perversely admirable. No compromise here! But nothing to stick in your head either. It’s not for me...it might be for you...just consider yourself warned!
