THROES “The Colorless Light Of Emptiness”

The album title suggests a gloomy listen is forthcoming and the cover art of somebody’s ashes being tossed into a lake confirms that hunch. Hailing from the rather unusual location of Boise, Idaho, THROES deal in monolithic sludge-fueled destruction.
The most glaring problem is a lack of original sound, as this sounds like a lot of grim sludge bands, but that’s getting to be par for the course. Despite the overly familiar approach, THROES deliver some devastating down-tuned gloom here. It’s not all “slow and low”, either…as tracks like “Revenge Death”, “Spiritual Debt” and the especially crushing “Eat Glass” are fast and punishing enough to be considered straight death metal. But most of the album relies on rubbery, dissonant riffs in a slower mode. “The Line” and “Basura” bounce and slither with a kind of perverse catchiness that gets the head nodding.
Vocals are the very typical harsh shouts that we’ve come to expect from this type of music, but at least there’s no “fragile” clean singing to be found, thank the Gods! Nope, THROES deliver death-flavored sludge metal only and if that’s what you’re looking for, look no further!
