Rotten death-doom from the depths of a Lovecraftian tomb is what we’re promised with BESOTTEN’s debut and that’s exactly what we get. And absolutely nothing more. This is an album you really can judge by its cover.
BESOTTEN can easily be described as a mix of sluggish INCANTATION riffery with the austere funerality of MY DYING BRIDE. And that’s about it. There’s really not much more to the music, which hits the expected notes. Just 5 tracks here, with two ten minute plus behemoths taking up the bulk of the record. Those are the tracks “Bathed In Insufferable Light” and “Bloodcairn”, where most of the gloomy MY DYING BRIDE melody can be found. The other three are more compact and lean towards pure death metal.
It is extremely well produced, as is typical for a Transcending Obscurity band, but the main problem here is that nothing really sticks. It is definitely heavy and repulsive enough, but is so rote for the style, with not one second coloring outside the lines. The result is a good listen but not an especially memorable one. Still, let’s keep in mind this is a debut and the room to grow is plentiful.
