Ah, the promo I’ve been dying to listen to and the review I’ve been dreading to write. The band whose name no one ever gets right pronouncing it – Sanguisugabogg – released a new record back in October and I’m happy to report that while the band is terribly over exposed “Hideous Aftermath” is damn good death metal.
“Rotted Entanglement” opens the record, and I dug it, it’s a cranial pounder if ever there was one. The first song on any record sets the tone for what to expect and I think, if I’m not mistaken, the tone for this record is mass carnage. “Felony Abuse Of A Corpse” is a circle pit fucking death metal monster that just stomps a mud hole into your head which is what extreme metal is supposed to do, right? Mission accomplished.
As you can probably tell, SANGUISUGABOGG is still in the business of using silly, cartoonish, splatter rock titles for songs which is straight out of the CANNIBAL CORPSE rule book but screw it, it kind of works in favor for these guys.
“Repulsive Demise,” might be my favorite song on this unholy beast of a disc. frontman Devin Swank said, “We wanted to lean into a Justin Broadrick-Godflesh kind of sound. It would be sick to include other elements like that in the future and do that kind of genre-stretching that bands like FEAR FACTORY or SEPULTURA did back in the 90’s.” Nailed it. “Repulsive Demise” has a super creepy industrial kick to it that takes the heaviness of “Hideous Aftermath” to a new and disturbing level.
And kudos to the boys for the super sick, thick as hell riff that not only opens “Erotic Beheading” but rips out your spine in the process. Look, I could go on and on about how good this record is, you get the idea. As much as I really wanted to hate this record because SANGUISUGABOGG is THAT over exposed these days, I give ‘em all the credit in the world for making a killer album with “Hideous Aftermath”. Stream it, buy it, rock it.
