DARK FUNERAL’s “A Beast To Praise” is a 13 track, 70 minute church burner capturing the band doing what they do best – spreading live evil. Captured atStockholm’s Fållan venue in 2022 during the band’s “We Are the Apocalypse” touring cycle, the album documents the sheer intensity and destructive power of DARK FUNERAL onstage, presenting a ferocious snapshot of the band in full flight. The record drops August 21. Are you ready, can you handle it?
“A Beast To Praise” opens with “Unchain My Soul” and I kid you not, I had to nervously scan my living room for pentagrams I thought might’ve been burned into my walls. Thankfully there was none. “The Arrival Of Satan’s Empire,” is nothing short of pure destruction and utter demonic mayhem.
I love this record for a lot of reasons and that says a lot because I utterly disdain live albums…a few come to mind I’ve really dug, but most are forgettable and fail to really capture the live intensity of whatever band it is. “A Beast To Praise” is the opposite of this.
The live gig is the bread and butter of every band. If you can’t pull it off, that word of mouth gets around quick. And considering the fact DARK FUNERAL’s been damning souls to hell since their inception in 1993, they’re masters of their stage craft.
If I have any complaint whatsoever it isn’t with this disc, it’s the fact that we don’t have a DVD to accompany it. The band and production team that brought this unearthly pleasure to life (or un-life) did such a good job with it that it pissed me off I didn’t have a visual to go along with it.
Overall, the production is great, the mix is top notch, and it certainly does DARK FUNERAL justice. I like the in between song banter onstage, I dig the intensity of the music, and holy shit, the anger and aggression level of DARK FUNERAL live isunbelievable. Hoping beyond hope they get booked at Milwaukee Metal Fest for 2027.For this reason, and a million other sins, DARK FUNERAL’s “A Beast To Praise” is a must buy. It’s a ball buster of black fuckin’ metal and praise the dark lord for it!
