There's a new spoof found-footage horror film out. I'm talking about the DVD release of a movie called "Woods Witch." Now this comes from Shawn C. Philips who is known for a number of low budget, quirky films. One that I saw previously was "Amitvville Karen." The production and acting performances on this one seem to be elevated from that one. That film was more of a silly over-the-top comedy. This still has those elements, but feels a little more grounded and serious.
This is an obvious take-off on the "Blair Witch" film and found footage movies, in general. But, this focuses much more on the interplay between the main characters and the lead up to actually going into the woods than it does the terror itself. In fact, I wouldn't call this a horror movie. I'm not quite sure what I'd call it, really. But the fact that it's about them looking for the witches and does get into horror territory late qualifies it as at least horror-adjacent.
The movie includes a number of star cameos including Tom Sizemore, Sally Kirkland, James Duvall, Robert Lisardo and Lisa Wilcox. Lauren Franchesca, who starred in the movie I mentioned before "Amityville Karen," has a lead role in this one. The movie was written by Shawn C. Phillips and Julie Anne Prescott.
There is a lot of humor in this, including plenty of jabs at things like social media influencers and paranormal shows. This has some gore, but it's more on the cartoony side than anything else. It's a goofy little film, but it definitely has its charms and its points.
It comes with a number of bonus features including the usual commentary and a behind the scenes video. Again, the movie is the main selling point. Overall, if you know what you are getting into, this won't disappoint. It's sort of trademark Shawn C. Philips, but elevated in terms of production and acting. If you like a lot of snarky comments and characters who obviously don't like one another, that's another draw to this one.
