There already has been some buzz building from this Brazilian band over the past month or so around my peers, so I was excited to review this new album by the band. To me, Brazil was always the home of some of the best symphonic power metal. I used to blind buy so many bands from the region since it was almost always really good. So now we have CREATURES, which is more of a traditional / rock band from the area. I have heard they are carrying the torch for traditional metal down there and are the second coming of DOKKEN. Well let’s see how this one stacks up to the hype.
The second track which is the first proper song “Devil In Disguise”, starts out with a nice high pitch howl to kick it all off to show that yes, this is in fact a heavy metal album. I listened to this album a few times to really let it sink in. On first listen this song is a good kick off to the rest of the album. It has great vocals and harmonies but also one thing that it is missing is a really catchy chorus and something to grab you. This one has more of a classic metal touch to it and not as much of the hard rock that was buzzed about. But this is a good one to open with to give the listener a hint of what is to come.
“Night of the Ritual” is a more pounding track with pulse racing riffs and enough hooks to go fishing with. This is one of the stronger songs on the album. On first listen I was looking for those DOKKEN influences and then the next track “Beware the Creatures” hit. This is where the band gets its praise for the DOKKEN and hard rock influence. I was never a huge DOKKEN guy but appreciate the band. They were never a high speed or catchy chorus band. They always came across as a band who held back and never went too crazy. That is the best way to describe this song.
My one issue with this really good album is a lot of the songs do bleed together. There isn’t a track that knocks you over and makes you go back instantly to re-listen to. But that is just me. It is filled with a lot of good songs and there is a load of potential to the band. Hopefully they can drop the shadow of DOKKEN influence and become their own thing. This album is something people should check out and should be a band that festivals from all over want to add to their line ups.
There is a lot of vibe of the Canadian band CAULDRON as well. I think more of the vocal style than the music over all. There is a lot of new blood popping up all over which is a great thing. CREATURES offer a lot more than a lot of them singing about spikes and leather and other clichés. I recommend this record to anyone looking for something fresh but with a feeling of the classics still hidden in. While the band is not original they put a new spin and polish on it and make it a really fun album to listen to and hopefully are here for the long haul. Looking forward to what CREATURES III will bring in the future.
