“HARSH” and “TO THE POINT” are what comes to mind after checking out this noisy Danish band. A mixture of abrasive hardcore and early 90’s noise rock, these guys don’t waste any time at all. “Spinner” is another one of those releases that’s not sure if it’s a full length or a mini-album. It comes in at well under a half hour and the primary focus seems to be show up, kick ass and leave in a hurry.
It’s loud and angry enough to appeal to metal fans, but musically, that’s not where EYES is coming from. Punk seems to be the main focus, with short songs and a lot of screaming ala CONVERGE. Honesty forces me to admit, this is not my preferred style, but it gets the job done. A nice fat bass and real-sounding drums provide a nice backdrop for crunchy, pissed-off odes such as “The Captain” and “Beelzebub, the Hypocrite”. Lots of scratchy noise rock seeps into the sound as well and songs like “Money Mouth” and “Clown” have a hammering, piston-like attack that’s not a million miles away from early HELMET. Fave track award, though, has to go to the strangely titled “Moving Day For The Overton Window”, which has such a straightforward catchy riff that can’t be resisted.
The lyrics are inspired by some sort of anime/manga influence and words can’t express how much I despise those things. The cutie pie anime sample “OP 1” that starts this thing off was almost enough to put me off the whole experience, but I soldiered on and found that “Spinner” is a short, sharp kick in the nuts.
