Doom doesn't get much doomier than what COLTSBLOOD dish out here. This doleful English trio has been quiet the last few years, but returns more gloomy than ever on "Obscured Into Nebulous Dusk". This is not catchy stoner rock or even epic doom in CANDLEMASS tradition, but something slower, noisier and more apocalyptic.
Consider first track "Until The Eidolon Falls" as a kind of test. This is about 11 and a half minutes of glacial funeral doom of the most agonizing kind...slow as molasses dripping in January, laced with torturous feedback, gruesome roars and plodding drums. Not quite to the level of PRIMITIVE MAN but not that far off, either. This one really pushed me to the limit.
But once you get past this first challenge, you find COLTSBLOOD isn't a one-trick pony (pun intended). "Waning of the Wolf Moon" is more aggressive and can almost be considered pure death without that much doom. It's a grinder! "Transcending The Immortal Gateway" is another long funeral doom cut, but with more weeping melodies ala MY DYING BRIDE. The best is saved for last with the monumental title track, which starts with cavernous church organ which bleeds into MASSIVELY HEAVY doom riffs. It's as slow as "Until the Eidolon Falls" but not quite as noisy and discordant. This track finds COLTSBLOOD at its best.
So four huge and truly doomy epics here to ruin your mood in the most crushing way...
