Don’t mess with a successful recipe! That’s something folks in all walks of life have discovered, including KFC, Coca-Cola and AC/DC. And that’s definitely the case for FROZEN SOUL, who have emerged as one of the most successful of the new wave death metal bands. On “No Place of Warmth”, they stick to the formula of BOLT THROWER style plod and crunch as well as lyrics dealing with sub zero topics.
I have stated before that the band is almost bereft of its own identity, but that might not be completely accurate. The BOLT THROWER comparisons certainly haven’t changed, but there’s a certain burliness to Chad Green’s mighty roars that is different from Karl Willets’ version. He’s the perfect guy for this kind of material…FROZEN SOUL is metal for 350 lb. neckbeard guys who slam into each other. And I mean that in the best way.
Title track kicks things off with a ton of double-bass and mid-paced thunder. From there, we have similar bone crushers like “Invoke War”, “Eyes of Despair” and “Frost Forged”. For me, the apex of the album is the one-two punch of “Dreadnought”/”Chaos Will Reign”, which are thicker and juicier than the brontosaur steaks Fred Flintstone used to chow down on. Much of this is due to Samantha Mobley’s incredibly deep and groovy bass, which I’m sure even BT’s legendary Jo Bench would bow down to.
A couple of very short and fast tracks, “Absolute Zero” and “Skinned By the Wind”, freshen things up and the final cut “Killin’ Time” is one of the catchiest FROZEN SOUL tunes without sacrificing death heaviness. All in all, the album continues on in a well worn groove just like a Sherman tank on its way to a frozen battlefield. Don’t argue with it and keep the recipe!
