Here a corpse, there a corpse, everywhere a corpse corpse… Another day in the death metal swamp and yet more corpses have floated to the surface. These dead bodies mean business, so let’s hold our noses and take a look…
MEPHITIC CORPSE exude a nauseating stench with an absolutely disgusting form of aural rot. This goes even beyond the current fad of “primitive death metal”, as they make UNDEATH sound like DREAM THEATER. Think along the lines of MORTICIAN meets DEVOURMENT, only with even more cheap production. Total sewer sludge here, with a drum sound that comes across like it was recorded a block away from the studio. Lots of Will Rahmer style subsonic grumbling which is utterly incomprehensible. But with song titles like “Gutpuked Maggot Treatment”, “Grisly Vomit On Self” and the touching ballad “Rectal Bugs”, you don’t really need lyrics. Is MEPHITIC CORPSE any good? Only if you seek the lowest level of death metal vomit, which is what they are aiming for. I do feel the occasional need to go slumming in this kind of ROTPIT neighborhood now and then, so it’s good for such masochism.
CORPSING from the UK sound to be a bit different, yet they may possibly be more brutal than MEPHITIC CORPSE. Their sound mixes dissonant noise with somewhat technical riffing, but there’s none of the melody and more purely “progressive” death that many tech death bands prefer. This is just a relentless assault of jagged, choppy riffs to cut up your brain. There are guest appearances from Luc of GORGUTS and Jason of AKERCOCKE and that also tells you something about CORPSING. The unfortunate thing about this brief 4 song EP is that you won’t remember any of it in a couple of days even though the production and playing ability is many leagues above MEPHITIC CORPSE. There’s just no memorability here. But brutality, yep, we have that aplenty.
A couple of real fun ones...if bodily dismemberment is your idea of fun.
