Here we have the 6th album from long running Canadian traditional metal band IRON KINGDOM. I heard some good things about this new album before getting a chance to listen to it. There was one thing that I forgot about this band that upon listening to the first song is that I can’t get past… the screeching vocals that this band has. It was always something that steered me away from previous albums. I know there are a lot of people who love this type of vocals, but for me it is a turn off. But let’s dig into the good points of the album.
The album kicks off into high gear with the song “Defenders” which is a great way to start the album. While not breaking any new ground, the song does have what it takes to be a keeper. There are a lot of hooks and great song writing and a catchy chorus. And I do love a catchy chorus! There is a lot of great build up and changes within the song that even at six minutes long it does not outstay its welcome. The song flows great into the second song “Eternal Emperor” which uses the gang style backing vocals which I am always a fan of. The song really picks up the pace of the album and keeps it moving. Like I stated earlier it’s the vocals that really hold back this from being amazing.
There is a lot to pack in with this album. It is a tad too long. Clocking in at 50 minutes, with the first and last songs are over 6 minutes. I think this would have benefited by being a tight 40. Making you want more instead of seeing how much is left. A few times along the way I was checking to see how much was left. While enjoyable there is a lot of the same throughout but never getting boring. I think it is the curse of some of the newer traditional metal bands music. While being a very well-crafted album, you can get lost in the songs since some blend too much together. It does not hold back on the speed aspect or great musicianship. While some songs blend together, each does offer something a tad different. The band did try to make each song something special. Did it work? That is up to the listener.
Overall I will recommend this album to fans of traditional metal only. The vocals were the hardest part to get past. While the band has their fans, I think a stronger vocalist could really push them to the next level since the whole band is full of talent. Hopefully more people will get a chance to hear and pick up this new album. I would have a hard time trying to compare them to any other band, which is a compliment. The album is really good and deserves to be heard. It is one that you will need to spin a few times for it to grab and click with you. There are 10 well-crafted songs for your enjoyment! Seek out “Shadows and Dust” and hear it for yourself.
