Here's a couple of bite-sized chunks of gore that serve as appetizers for later, fuller feasts of decay. So let me give my gastronomic two-bits...
HAEMORRHAGE are by far the more known quantity. These Spanish surgical psychos were one of the very first bands to emulate the gruesome style of early CARCASS. And they're about the last fiends standing in that specialized micro-genre. "Opera Medica" therefore provides more of what HAEMORRHAGE fans have come to expect. "Scalpels, Scissors and Other Forensick Instruments" is CARCASSian death metal in the utmost, right down to the samples of doctors discussing their dirty deeds. A more interesting track is "Polyclinic Abattoirs", which has a spider-like, skittering type of vibe, more reminiscent of "Necroticism" days than usual. 'Obstetric Phantom" is pretty typical HAEMORRHAGE stuff but "Nomenclator Pathologicum" has such a dirty swinging groove that it almost forces you to headbang. The EP wraps up with a cover of DISMEMBER's "Deathevokation" and seeing as that is one of the greatest death metal songs ever written, it's almost impossible to fuck up. And the Spaniards don't.
DEAD CHASM for Italy is a new name to me, but on "Spectral Tyranny", they lay down such a perfect example of morbid death/doom that I'm instantly wanting to hear more from them. Think of the slower riffs of ASPHYX and GRAVE, mixed with that typical INCANTATION cavernous sound. Nothing new, but man, they do it well. "Beneath Decadent Shadows" starts with an almost stupid doomy riff, but switches to a killer fast pace at about the 1:30 mark and it just destroys from there. The songs are short and to the point and I wouldn't have minded an extra couple of tunes here. Both the title track and "Spawned In Absurdity" brings us more icky, graveyard fresh goodness. I enjoyed the HAEMORRHAGE effort, but DEAD CHASM really lowered the boom. More from these guys, please!
