BLACK SORCERY

BLACK SORCERY     “Deciphering Torment Through Malediction”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Black metal has reached a point where bands are either slavishly aping the old days with no attempt at modernity or originality or else they are adding so many bizarre influences that they have lost the plot. There seems to be very little in between those two poles these days.

BLACK SORCERY firmly belong to the first camp. They hail from the darkest, dankest pits of Rhode Island...the grimmest scene in the States!...and they are a band that tries to recreate the glorious days of the cryonically frozen 90’s. Or so we are led to believe. I will give them credit for accomplishing their goal, as this sounds very much like a Scandinavian band from about 95 or 96. So if you’re into blizzards of freezing riffs, troll gargling with razor blade vocals and sad melodies strewn amidst the wasteland, you’re in luck. This band is repelled by innovation like a vampire shuns garlic.

GORGOROTH in classic mode is a good comparison. Although the tunes are all fast and frozen, BLACK SORCERY has the knack of injecting subtle differences that keep songs relatively distinct. To an untrained ear, this will all sound pretty similar, but for black metal devotees, they will pick up on it pretty quickly. And I must admit, tracks like the epic “Gommorah’s Virtue” and “Heinous Rites” do have that mix of fury and sorrow that made black metal of the classic period so entrancing.

So banish any thought of newness from your mind as you slip into the wintry realm of BLACK SORCERY…
