ATOMIC WITCH play a quirky kind of thrash/speed metal that is difficult to pin down. The way these songs lurch and hop around suggests either ADHD or maybe some good coke...it's a throwback to wild, proggy thrash like NASTY SAVAGE colliding with very early MEGADETH. It sounds like it's a half inch away from going over the edge and into the abyss...but there's entertainment to be found amidst the madness.
They love their speed, that's for sure, but each tune has an assload of time changes and abrupt twists of riff, as well as manic solos popping up and the yelpy, shrieky kind of vocals that seem to go hand in hand with this nutty kind of speed metal. The fun starts with "Morgue Rat" and it never really eases up for the entire length of "Death Etiquette". Hard to say which track hits hardest but "Dream Rot" will really make your head spin and it has an almost MERCYFUL FATE vibe mixed in. Also, the insane drum skills of Nick Amato are best heard on this track. The guitarists cut loose, but Nick is the engine that drives the ATOMIC WITCH war machine.
Lyrics would seem to match the wildness of the songs, as track names like "Sabbath Breaker", "Skelecidal" and "Worms And Dirt" indicate. The quirks ensure that ATOMIC WITCH has a more distinct sound than most thrash revivalists and that counts for a lot. Worth a look for sure!
