ASTRIFEROUS “Atavistic Unraveling”

The pleasant and peaceful land of Costa Rica seems to be a strange place for a thriving extreme music scene, but I’m coming across more and more bands coming from this ecological wonderland. ASTRIFEROUS may be the best yet. If you like dank and cryptic death metal from the tomb, it doesn’t get much better than this.
As always, the key is songwriting. The guys in ASTRIFEROUS obviously take lessons from the greatest the genre has produced…IMMOLATION, MORBID ANGEL, INCANTATION, BENEDICTION and others of similar stature. They know the riff is king, but it’s how you put them together than makes them effective. On “Atavistic Unraveling”, we have well thought out songs that still can bash your skull in and smell like a week old corpse. It’s an excellent balance between creeping doom, powerful mid-paced chugs and volcanic blasts of fury, spiced with good guitar solos and a vocalist who sounds like he’s ready to rip your guts out and eat them raw.
I will not go into agonizing detail on the construction of each song as some are wont to do. Suffice it to say, when you hear the likes of “Dissolution of Eternity”, “Arcane Demonomania” and the masterful epic “Resonance Cascade”, you are hearing pure death metal as it was meant to be played. ASTRIFEROUS is bringing darkness to the sunny beaches of Costa Rica and I am grateful!
