For this edition of Philm Phreaks I’m looking at a Blu-Ray release of a film called “Vampire Zombies from Space.”
Now, this movie is a pseudo-vintage film. It’s also a love letter to Ed Wood. It really does feel a lot like something that Wood could have done, and that’s very obviously intentional. Two definite Wood references I spotted include a character mentioning “Planet 9 in Outer Space”, an obvious nod to “Plan 9 From Outer Space.” Another is a business sign bearing the name Ed Wood. I’m betting there are others included that I missed.
The story to this definitely has some links to that previously mentioned Wood film. Aliens who are vampires are attempting to take over the Earth by turning humans into vampire zombies. Now let me say that, as opposed to Wood who played it straight in his film, this is definitely a spoof. In fact, it almost leans toward Mel Brooks territory in some ways, although not as over the top as that suggests.
There are so many things about this film that I like so much. The sort of Elvis wanna be tough guy, misfit leading man is a nice touch. So are all the sexual double entendres. The intentionally visible strings on the flying saucers along with the fact that they randomly change size is a great touch, as well. Those things are definitely nods to Wood’s work.
Honestly, if you come into this knowing what to expect, and especially if you are a fan of Wood’s work, as I am, this is destined to be a good time. It does get gorier than Wood ever did, though, more along the lines of “Night of the living Dead.” That said, I think this out-gores that one at times, but it also gets a little over the top in that department, played for gags.
All in all, this is just so much fun. The Blu-Ray comes with a number of bonus features, including deleted scenes and more. It’s all icing on the cake as the movie itself is the real gem here. I think Ed Wood would have approved of this movie. At least I hope he would. It seems like the film-makers had a real understanding of his work.
