The Memento Mori label is known for quality old school death metal and here’s another gem. KRYPTICY is heavily influenced by American DM of the very early 90’s and also PESTILENCE. So no, no Swedish death metal vibe here at all. I was looking for the Scott Morrison and Alex Perialas production credits on this one, it has that kind of sound in spades. Musically, we’re talking “Consuming Impulse” PESTILENCE, the first couple of SUFFOCATION albums and first three MORBID ANGEL disks. “Infected Pharaoh” touches down like an EF5 tornado to flatten everything with blazing, ever changing riffs and gruesome vocals. It’s pretty apparent that this is one of the better acts drawing inspiration from non-Swedish death metal, as “Hyapatia’s Heresy” is even faster and more labyrinthine than the preceding track.
The band is twisty without being real “tech death”. Things are always raw and in your face. They have a song called “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and despite having the most tired and cliched subject matter, the sonic part of the tune kicks ass. But then again, this band has a song called “Virgins Recently Fucked Sacrifice”, so we are definitely not dealing with lyrical geniuses here. Another track is simply called “UGH!” and no, Tom Warrior does not make a guest appearance. But wow, does the bass guitar pop on this one.. Actually, the bass pops throughout.
KRYPTICY has a kind of rough sincerity to their death metal that makes even silly song titles and lyrics easy to take. If the glory days of bands like MALEVOLENT CREATION and SUFFOCATION get yer motor runnin’, hop onto “The Non-Return”.
