Queens, New York grind monsters CHEPANG bring their self-described “immigrindcore” to Relapse Records with their label debut “Jhyappa”. To cut to the chase, this album DESTROYS.
These guys spent half their lives in Kathmandu, Nepal. Hence, “immigrindcore”, and “Jhyappa” is a Nepalese grindcore album. One that occasionally also describes life in the dynamic melting pot of the Big Apple. But the lyrics are roared in Nepalese. And the songs are largely about Nepalese philosophies, specifically self-immolation as means of self-preservation. Use your imagination to convert that idea into music and you might get the idea.
The album sounds just as fast and destructive as setting oneself on fire should. First and foremost, these guys sound like a band playing together inside a real room. The result is simultaneously a vibe and a sonic character: low-fi because it’s super fucking heavy? I guess that’s how I’d describe it. But it’s raw, violent, and massive. The anger is palpable and cavernous.
CHEPANG’s “Jhyappa” is a sub twenty-minute grindcore gem imbued with enough true Nepalese sensibilities to make it stand out from the pack while still maintaining a foothold firmly inside grindcore territory. The album is truly unique while also delivering a constant barrage of unmatched aggression.
This one will please fans of any hardcore-influenced strain of extreme music. Go grab it!
