GRAVE INFESTATION are gearing up to release their sophomore effort ‘Carnage Gathers’ three years after dropping their debut disc. What to expect? A lot of old school death metal oozing pus loads of death and doom, piss and attitude. GRAVE INFESTATION take a very raw, very stripped-down approach with “Carnage Gathers” and guess what folks? It works!
GRAVE INFESTATION keep it simple. Volume, distortion, and heaviness. Add in great songwriting, great musical execution, and the result is a super heavy, super creepy slab of deathly goodness. Listen to “Ritualized Autopsy” and tell me otherwise. In fact, vocalist/guitarist Graham Christofferson states: “Each song references a story of someone’s strange relationship to death, real or fictitious.” Listening to this record is an assault of the senses.
The mood and tone of GRAVE INFESTATION’s music fits this narrative to a tee and they’re not afraid to slow it down and build atmosphere only to drop a hammer full of crushing, bombastic metal on your face in the end. It seems like a lot of acts are opting for cleaner, even more progressive death metal which is fine for some fans but for me I like a band that sounds like they just crawled out of an open grave looking for a Marshall Stack to plug into. Hence, GRAVE INFESTATION.
If I did have one complaint – and only one complaint with this album – after awhile each song tends to blend into the next. The positive though, every track is a killer blast of ghastly, ghoulish death metal played at a violent frantic pace with enough heaviness to crush a million zombies with. “Carnage Gathers” is a must buy for sure.
