SATURNUS      “The Storm Within”

By Octopi Mills

Flemming Rasmussen (early METALLICA albums) is said to be at the helm as producer on this new album by the Danish SATURNUS, who have been around since 1991. Known under the style of "Death Doom", the new music certainly shows, here and there and everywhere the influence they have had on themselves and a wide range of other acts. The use of melancholic melody and the heavier sound, the spoken word poetics, and the guttural growl make a trademark here in the pace of a slow, steady horse. This is that old style of renown; that old style akin to works of ANATHEMA, MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST..these early 90s acts.

SATURNUS has their own style of this of course, and perhaps one can divest from it Denmark, somehow; that great mark of the tribe of Dan? I look for it in the narrow gap that forms through the Caucasus where the tribes were lost in scatter, though I have to still my mind that is lost outright in it's own abandon in the thoughts of pastries and such; lands rich in such butters and creams. The songs bear the atmosphere of twilight, dusks and dawns and the gray of the storm and sea, and thusly the album cover art is in classic form and in line with the music. Somber keys and little pieces enhance this effect, bring a crisp, frosty chill of sorrows.

Paul Kuhr of NOVEMBER’S DOOM makes a guest appearance providing such keys on "Even Tide" and if anyone is familiar with that music, I must say that it is quite a bit in the vein of this album here. The album keeps a steady flow of the moods established early on and goes on to the same tried and true methods as in the classic sense of the years gone by. I'm sure their following will welcome this new album.
