Hope these dudes don’t run into legal issues with Marvel Comics, who have a supervillain also named Graviton. In any event, this New England act doesn’t just blur the line between thrash and death metal…they annihilate it. The band pulls no punches and hits with maximum force.
Although they certainly owe a debt to classic thrash and death, this is not a nostalgia band. GRAVITON manages to sound fully in the present day. “Empire of Pain” makes for a brutal first strike, with Taylor Scott’s gruff roars much more firmly anchored in the death metal realm. The issue I have with the song as well as a couple of others is that it seems to go about a minute longer than it needs to, resulting in a bit of fatigue.
GRAVITON show their promise when they shift gears just a little bit. “Pillars of Life” leans more to the straight thrash side of the fence, with a bounciness to the riffing that makes the neck bob. Even better is “Celestial Mass”, a longer song that works. This is an extremely well written tune that dials back the speed but is mega-heavy nonetheless, with some beautiful lead soloing.
The band also has a sci fi aspect to them, which is not that novel anymore, but realized well here. GRAVITON has got a little work to do, but I can foresee a strong future for them.
