You WRANG? Yes...yes, you are. Kidding aside, WRANG is a new (at least to me) black metal force from the Netherlands and I have to say, they are quite impressive!
"Verwording" gives us six efficient and blisteringly fast black metal tracks that manage to keep their own identity. I sense traces of classic Teutonic thrash in some of the riffs here, as well as the expected black metal tropes. "Stilstand" starts the assault with blazing guitar notes that seem to vibrate and ring with power until the massive drums kick in and we get a heavy duty ass-pounder from the darker side of life. The vocals are in a lower register which also gives WRANG its own vibe. "Entartete Kunst" doesn't let up on the gas at all and "Nachten In Walheim" starts off with a riff that almost sounds like vintage POSSESSED and that's never a bad thing in my book.
The last three tracks show a bit more melody and experimentation while still keeping their bite."Voor Ons De Zee" has a FROST/HELLHAMMER riff and even a "OOGH!" but soon develops a more melodic feel that's still dark. "De Duivel Is De Ander" is just ripping fast blackness in MARDUK tradition while the final epic cut "Bitjebauw" features the crystalline bell-like tones of what seems to be a glockenspiel emerging to form a beautiful counterpoint to the fast black metal of the rest of the song. Gradually increasing keys finally overtake the song and give it a melancholy feel.
This is a strong album front to back from WRANG. The ship depicted on the beautiful cover art might be in stormy seas but the voyage for WRANG is just beginning.
