Germany's RESURRECTED have been going at it since 1993. They come from the same area that gave birth to SODOM but have little in common with them except for being extreme metal.
There's a bit more going on here than first meets the eye (or ear). The band have all the attributes of an old school death metal band but if you asked me what band they sound like, I couldn't give you a straight answer. That indicates there's something original going on here. "Perpetual" is disorienting right from the start, as the intro "Unholy Intercession" has a queasy, unfocused sound with almost ridiculously exaggerated vocals. It throws you off right from the start. That leads right into a rampaging "Human Wrath", a standard hell bent for leather DM number with some unfortunate typewriter drumming, which is a recurring drawback here.
An album full of such tunes would have been rather forgettable, but RESURRECTED show they have a bit more up their sleeve. There's some pretty unique riffing to be found; "Forever Damned" has a manic, almost military style beat to it, coupled with a rather unique kind of death growl. "Sanity Is Lost" dials it back a bit, with a chugging pace and some PESTILENCE style guitar work. "Immaculate Deception" is a high speed highlight like old MORBID ANGEL, but with a cool hook and a nice guitar solo. The title track itself is machine-like, almost industrial and sounding like something forged in a steel factory...this is the closest RESURRECTED get to their own sound.
Interspersed with these tracks are energetic but very typical rippers like "Decomposed" and a cover of MALEVOLENT CREATION's "Infernal Creation"...a band with more than a little resemblance to RESURRECTED. Yet there's enough differences here to make "Perpetual" a fairly interesting listen. Not essential, but worth a look!
