Calling L.A., California home, Jizzy Pearl's LOVE/HATE really encapsulate the Sunset Strip mood and flair of the 80s heyday. Current and fresh for a band who has had numerous members over the years and initially came on the scene in with major label debut “Blackout In The Red Room” in 1990. They had been seemingly left behind as all the other Sunset Strip bands got signed over the years. Having toiled on the L.A. club circuit since 1985 LOVE/HATE would finally be signed in 1988. Not unlike the other bands getting signed, especially GUNS N’ ROSES, L.A. GUNS, and FASTER PUSSYCAT, LOVE/HATE was playing a sleaze based metal like those bands and others of the mid to late 80s. It seems as though they were a band that came a little too late to the party and just never gained traction. That does not make them a bad band in any event. Eventually through all the ups and down things finally in the 2000s seem to have fallen into place for them.
LOVE/HATE 2025 is Jizzy Pearl on vocals (the only “Blackout In The Red Room” member remaining), Darren Householder on guitar, Christian Kimmett on bass, and Dave Moreno on drums. I am not sure when the other members of the band aside from Pearl, joined the band. Jizzy's credits include being the current singer for QUIET RIOT as well as stints singing for RATT and L.A. GUNS. Jizzy Pearl's LOVE/HATE in 2025 bring us some great sleaze punk heavy metal with “Punk Rock Fiesta!” Don't let Punk Rock in the title sway you against listening to this great album. It's a party of high energy rock.
My favorite tracks are “You're Gonna Burn”, “The Wrath Of Love”, “Time To Take Your Pill”, and “Can't Be Wrong” which is the mellowest song on the album, but it creeps. Creeps along and creeps into your ears with some sparse cool guitars. Until it kicks into gear. Until it doesn't. All of the other tracks rock with a fervor not heard in a long bit. At the end of the 28 minute long album you are left with a sense that it's a 20s salute to L.A. in the 80s. Of course the closest I can say in style would be “Appetite” by G n R or even FASTER PUSSYCAT’'s “Wake Me When It's Over”. Maybe even a sprinkle of “Cocked & Loaded” by L.A. GUNS fits. There is not a bad track on “Punk Rock Fiesta!”
With a punk rock edge that fuels the energy, Jizzy Pearl's LOVE/HATE deliver an excellent high octane rocking album with “Punk Rock Fiesta!” It starts fast and furious and continues that way all the way to the last note. Even the slow number midway through the album does not detract from its energy. Even bands like HANOI ROCKS and D'MOLLS came to mind with fleeting passages nodding to them. This is a great original album in today's metal realm.
