Finish forefathers of grindcore, ROTTEN SOUND are back with another EP of vicious, crusty grind called “Mass Extinction”. It’s the musical equivalent of a prime Mike Tyson. Aggressive as fuck. Violent. Short.
As a connoisseur of the genre, I find this collection of songs extraordinary. The only criticism I could possibly levy is that I want more. The EP was finished by the time I wrote *these words*. My selfish fan perspective is that it’s too good to be over that quickly. I had the same reaction back in 1988 when Tyson annihilated Michael Spinks in just 91 seconds.
These songs vacillate between blistering blast beat and d-beat sections and huge, filthy grooves. And I mean HUGE. The mix is monstrous. Big bottom end lays down an ominous foundation for the cacophony of staccato drums, buzz-saw riffs, and the turbine-like whirling of shredded vocal cords all fighting to smash in our ears first.
The songs on “Mass Extinction” were tracked during the sessions for ROTTEN SOUND’s last LP, “Apocalypse” (2023). That album sounds great, too. Even so, “Mass Extinction” is still somehow an improvement. It’s slightly bigger and sharper. I know I’m basically comparing the sharks in the JAWS movies here, but there IS a difference that’s worth noting.
Conceptually, ROTTEN SOUND's “Mass Extinction” tackles prominent societal problems like toxic consumerism and labor exploitation—topics fans would expect from the band. The lead single, "Brave New World" urges unity instead of divisive politics, and all of it rips through in less than ten minutes, like a blast-beat tornado.
Fans of the ROTTEN SOUND already know what’s up. But for fans of extreme metal, especially grindcore who’ve somehow not yet encountered this band, “Mass Extinction” will make you a fan before the opening track is over.
