“Olde” is indeed the operative word for this unusual Aussie crew. There is something about their eccentric approach to underground metal that reeks of olden times when the genre was experimenting wildly and without restraint. Much of OLDE OUTLIER’s sound is rooted in the mid-80s but something about this goes back even further, to days of SABBATH and HEEP.
Apparently the band is rooted in a previous band called INNSMOUTH which I am not familiar with. “Lovecraftian” is a good word to describe the tone here, with traces of Hammer horror and sinister folklore. They specialize in longer songs where they can stretch out and lock into a groove. There’s a restless riff-hopping feel reminiscent of MERCYFUL FATE but at times, they can batter away like CELTIC FROST. An odd combination but an effective one. It’s a very eldritch vibe, with a musty analog production. Something also kind of reminds me of 70’s PRIEST and Ozzy-era SABBATH and even creepy Italian prog. On the last two tracks, “Swept” and “All Is Bright”, there’s a prolonged usage of quieter flanged guitar tones resulting in a mystical edge.
I have to say I prefer the first two tracks (there are just four all together) where they focus more on an aggressive riff-based sound. “The Revellers” is the best OLDE OUTLIER has to offer, the mix between FATE complexity, FROST thickness and 70’s murkiness is just about perfect. Vocals are usually gruff but occasionally there is a kind of low moaning which adds eeriness. “The Pounding of Hooves” is the longest track and has some very powerful moments, but methinks it’s just a tad too long.
A most intriguing listen from OLDE OUTLIER, recommended to those who like a good dose of eccentricity with their heaviness.
