So another band bites the dust. This time, it’s Germany’s death metal troop ENDSEEKER. OK, maybe not as big a name as MEGADETH or SEPULTURA, but these guys know how to do authentic Swedish death metal with that grisly chainsaw bite.
The cover is gross and gnarly in a way any CANNIBAL CORPSE fan would appreciate. Like SEPULTURA, these guys have made the head-scratching decision to end things with an EP instead of a full-length. They kick things off with a blistering hot “Enemies of Peace”, which shows you don’t have to be Swedish to wield a guitar that sounds like a chainsaw. “No After, No Before” follows with a slightly less frenzied but no less heavy pace. It’s my pick for the best one here, but the title track is neck and neck with it…it’s just as morbid as the title indicates. “Life Breeds Death” is a switch to more of a Gothenburg melodic death metal sound, but not sure it suits these guys as much as the raw meat Stockholm vibe.
ENDSEEKER has always been known for doing odd covers, the best of which was their awesome take on the theme from “Escape From New York”. They wrap up their career with their take on one of DAVID HASSELHOFF’s cheesy wimp rock anthems, “True Survivor”. No amount of heaviness (or irony) can save this track from the dustbin and it’s a poor choice to end a band with.
I probably won’t be crying myself to sleep over the demise of ENDSEEKER, but I will still miss their blood-and-guts take on the HM-2 death metal sound.
