Australia has always produced some killer extreme metal, going back to bands like HOBBS’ ANGEL OF DEATH and SLAUGHTER LORD and proceeding to the likes of BLOOD DUSTER, BESTIAL WARLUST and more. ABOMINATOR belongs on that list...they can trace their lineage to the early 90’s, emerging from the same war metal scene that produced BESTIAL WARLUST.
This band hasn’t lost an ounce of vitriol in 30 plus years. This is how war metal should be done...not as sloppy noise like a vacuum cleaner and drumming like a typewriter, but something sounding full and crushing, with an atmosphere of absolute satanic violence. “The Fire Brethren” boasts a great sound where everything grinds away with clarity and volume. That allows THE RIFF to emerge supreme and decimate everything in its path. There are great ones here on almost every track, starting with “The Templar’s Curse” and ending with the lengthy “Sulfur From The Heavens”, which mixes BOLT THROWER like bulldozing with more typical blasting.
There’s also a twisted and evil feeling to the music which sounds really demonic. “Covens For Azmodeus” and “Progenitors of the Insurrection of Satan” seem especially wicked, with some really warped string bending going on. Now it’s true that this full on satanic war metal can be kind of tiring and ABOMINATOR doesn’t entirely escape that, but this album really seemed to fly by. Some day I hope other war metal bands will figure out what ABOMINATOR already knows: it takes more than speed and noise to make good extreme metal.
