NECROTUM

NECROTUM     "Defleshed Exhumation"

By Dr. Abner Mality

These days I feel like I'm buried beneath a million rotten corpses as the avalanche of death metal bands is well nigh endless. And much of that suffocating avalanche is pretty faceless, as every new band considers themselves the perfect heir to the necrotic giants of the past. So it is with Romania's NECROTUM.

I don't want to be hating on these guys because they have a good handle on what they are doing. But unfortunately this record comes to me as I'm overcome by a wave of extreme death fatigue. I mean, look at this...the cover art, the album name, the song names, even the font used for their name. Tired is just not the word. And songs like "Warped In Entrails" (I think they meant "wrapped in entrails", but who knows?) and "Dissolved in the Flesh Pits" have lost their ability to shock and disgust, no matter how competently they are played. And believe me, NECROTUM is more than competent. I don't need weird dissonance or insane experimentation in my daily diet of death, but an attempt to rise above mere competence is required to get a rise out of this metal ghoul.

So NECROTUM draw the short end of the stick from me today. A year ago, it might have been different. But I know I'm gonna get at least 5 to 10 more like this in the next week. Rot on...
