Atlanta’s TÓMARÚN are as proggy as extreme metal can get. They lay the prog on hard and thick here, wandering from DREAM THEATER type jamming to OPETH-ian wistfulness to tech-death excursions in OBSCURA and NECROPHAGIST mode. If you like a lot of wandering in your metal, this will fit nicely into your collection. If you’re looking for compact and to the point riffage, don’t unpack your luggage, you need to keep looking.
The band certainly have the chops for what they’re attempting. The drums sound a little mechanical and tends to overpower, especially at high speed. But the guitar and key work is spot on. The strange thing with TÓMARÚN is that I find the more progressive and less extreme parts to be the strongest part of their music. The blasting black metal parts just tend to go in one ear and out the other. But when the band indulge their inner nerds, they come up with pleasant and intriguing moments. They do melody better than they do brutality.
“Beyond Obsidian Euphoria” is indeed a record of “moments”...you will find them nestled inside each song. But as far as complete and total songs are concerned, they’re not quite there yet. They have some really long epics here, like “Silver Ashen Tears” and “The Final Pursuit of Light” but they just kind of go on and on. The latter track has got some stunning moments over its 14 minute plus length...but again, we are talking of moments.
This is an intriguing work of progressive extremity and TÓMARÚN have it in them to put together a classic. But not yet...the work is not finished.
