Melodic metal act AIRFORCE dropped their newest disc “Acts Of Madness” on February 21 via RPM ROAR. Let’s cut to the chase, this isn’t a good record. It’s far from a good record. The biggest problem with this album is the invasive IRON MAIDEN influence that rides through it start to finish, thanks in part to the singer and his very Dickinson inspired vocals.
The problem is, if you’re going to pull this off – and why not if you can do it – the vocals need to be spot on and the music must match it. ATTICK DEMONS and STRAY GODS are excellent examples of bands that do this flawlessly and keep their musical identity. I never got a feeling for AIRFORCE’s identity at any point with this disc. All I heard was low energy, MAIDEN-ish tunes or bad, cheesy metal like “Cursed Moon.” Good god, who ever allowed this song to make the cut on this record should be fired.
The other issues with “Acts Of Madness” relate to the production which sounded amateurish and underproduced while the songs just lacked energy and gusto by the band. It felt like AIRFORCE was holding back and only delivering a fraction of what they had inside themselves. This is metal, make me wanna throw a fist in the air! Instead, I just wanted to sit down and rest for a while, maybe get a good deal on my car insurance.
I don’t’ want to keep slagging on AIRFORCE or how underwhelming this album is. I’m not sure if the MAIDEN worship was intentional but it failed big time on this record. Couple that with lackluster, two-dimensional tracks like “Sniper” and well, the rest of this record, and you’ve got a formula for failure. Check it out, stream it, but I’m not recommending “Acts Of Madness”. Bad karaoke isn’t for me.
