LIQUIFIED DECOMPOSITION “Bloated In the Pond”

A sophomore album ideally should see the band sharpening their sound and kicking everything up a notch from their debut. Thankfully, that’s exactly what Iowa goremongers LIQUIFIED DECOMPOSITION have done on the delicately titled “Bloated In the Pond”. In almost every way, it’s an improvement on the crude but effective debut “Filekeeper”.
One immediately noticeable positive change is the addition of human drummer Brandyn Curran. Whereas “Filekeeper” featured flat drum programming, the touch of a living (?) skinsman automatically gives “Bloated…” a more lively sound. The production is better all around, but not to the point where the gruesome death metal sounds canned or digital. The material this time comes across a lot catchier and more memorable, almost like a SIX FEET UNDER that actually works! The likes of “One Body A Week”, “Fed To The Furnace” and “Bourbon Slayer” rely on memorable, mostly mid-paced riffs. The grisly vocals of Matt Mihalik ( with occasional enhancement from Josh Demuth) have also improved over the debut…they have a multi-tracked, more comprehensible sound while still being gross as hell.
I would still put LIQUIFIED DECOMPOSITION in the “primitive” death metal category as their material doesn’t focus on technical showmanship that much. But this is definitely not a slam or goregrind album. “Bloated In the Pond” has really upped the ante and I look forward to what album #3 will sound like!
