MOOSE CULT is the latest addition to the "Eat Lead And Die" circle of bands, composed of MONSTERWORKS, THUN and BULL ELEPHANT. They call their particular shtick "enviro-metal"...what it sounds like is a lot like "Leviathan" era MASTODON. In other words, prog metal with beefy riffs and a trace of death and doom metal as well.
It's a fairly breezy listen, well- played and recorded, but I don't think it has enough staying power to make its way to the "classic" level. The album is relatively brief and balances between longer, more complex tracks and straightforward short bangers. I prefer the hard charging "Death Meditation" and "Headless Cult". both of which have a good jolt of energy. The CULT have no problem with breaking off into dreamy, more laid back sections, as opener "Erewhon" and "Curse of Creation" prove. The instrumental "Gateway To Evolving Though" starts as almost jazz fusion before hulking up. Vocals from Jonny Moose are all over the places, from contemplative to grisly death growls and all points in between. Despite moments of grinding heaviness, such as the beginning of the title track, MOOSE CULT never really reaches the level of a true skullcrusher.
Lyrically, the band are inspired by Samuel Butler's 19th century satirical classic "Erewhon", which is unique. I'd venture to say the lyrics are the best part of this. Much like its "mother" band MONSTERWORKS, MOOSE CULT is interesting but not much more.
