HOUKAGO GRIND TIME

HOUKAGO GRIND TIME    "Koncertos Of Kawaiiness"

By Dr. Abner Mality

In the interest of accuracy, the album's name is actually "Koncertos Of Kawaiiness : Stealing Jon Chang's Ideas, A Book by Andrew Lee"...you can easily understand why I refrain from repeating it.

HOUKAGO GRIND TIME is one of the aforementioned Mr. Lee's  numerous metal projects and the least serious  It combines the most brutal of all genres, grindcore, with the sickening cutesy sweetness of the "moe" anime style. The sheer absurdity of this mash-up makes HGT unique. It's almost enough to make me forget my loathing of anime...almost, but not quite. In my case, moe is definitely less.

As for the musical aspect of HGT, it's as raw and violent as grind can get. It's right up there with REPULSION and INSECT WARFARE...and yes, Jon Chang's DISCORDANCE AXIS as well. Song titles like  "I Love Jelly Filled Donuts" and "You Have Broken My Nutbladder" belie the roaring cacophony of the music, complete with vomiting doomsday growls and rapid fire drums that sound like coconuts being bashed together. One thing that really stands out are Lee's excellent guitar solos, a treat whenever they appear.

It's quite exhausting to listen to and the chirpy soundbites of insipid anime characters mean nothing to me  I prefer Lee's other band RIPPED TO SHREDS but HOUKAGO GRIND TIME surely delivers the brutality...in spades!
