Germany is not immune to the caveman death metal trend. MY DARKEST HATE have just hopped aboard that train with “Rust and Bones” and hope to make a mark. Now this is actually the sixth album for these guys, but I don’t think they have too high a profile here in the States, so “Rust And Bones” is likely their introduction to folks here.
The band teeters on the edge of being also-rans, but they manage to keep from falling off like a skilled tightrope walker. This is very simple death metal based on mid-paced chug and thunder. Technical it ain’t, but there’s an undeniable catchiness to some of the riffs here that reminds me of the likes of BENEDICTION and ASPHYX...good names to conjure with! And whattaya know...David Ingram from BENEDICTION actually makes an appearance on “He Who Never Sleeps”. I prefer his growls to MY DARKEST HATE frontman Claudio Enzler’s, personally.
The songs that use a little more speed and anger come across strongest. “Vengeance My Brother”, “Flammenland” and “Our Legions, Our Pride” have that simple straightforward punch that can’t be ignored. But there’s also plenty of good ol’ chug-a-thug on “Sinister Warfare” and “King Of Slaves”. The opening track “Rust” reminds me somewhat of KATAKLYSM’s “In Shadows and Dust”. The tracks outside of these are pretty much in one ear and out the other...more like recent SIX FEET UNDER and I don’t need to tell you how underwhelming that can be.
This isn’t going to make a big splash, but you can put “Rust and Bones” in the “comfort food” section of the death metal aisle at your local metal mart.
