“Before the tragedy, no one ever thought this band was going to exist without Trevor.” That's Trevor Strnad, frontman and co-founder of THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDERwho passed away in 2022. Instead of ending TBDM the band regrouped, figured out their future, and decided to carry on.
Fast forward to present day 2024 and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER have emerged as the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes with a new screamer extreme at the mic and a brand-new record titled “Servitude”. Moving from guitar to vocals is TBDM co-founder Brian Eschbach and the result is nothing less than spectacular. The “vokills” are great and the energy coming off this album is downright impressive.
So, how's “Servitude” overall? It's just what you'd expect it to be, incredible. The disc is a showcase for what THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER does best: melding thrash with death metal and sharpening it to a razor's edge. In terms of what this band does sonically “Servitude” finds the band at the very tip top of their game. Tracks six "Asserting Dominion" and seven "Servitude" are without doubt the two best songs on the record with their sonically amped up aggression and brutality. These two should be staples of the band's live set if they aren’t already.
Really, there's no bad songs on this album. I mentioned "Asserting Dominion" and "Servitude,” but "Evening Ephemeral" and "Mammoth's Hand" also deserve mention too. 'Servitude' is the perfect record for TBDM to come back with after Strnad's death. You can feel some anger, some range, but a lot of positivity which shines through and drives the sonic intensity of the record. 'Servitude' is perfection, it's a must buy.
