The constant proliferation of “cavernous” death metal bands continues apace. This has been going on for so long now, it can’t be considered a “trend” but more like something that will remain until the Earth turns to dust. Which is something IGNOBLETH is probably trying to bring about with this record…
One moment sepulchrally doomed, the next a torrent of bestiality, this Italian unit knows the sound they are after and produce it well. Names like INCANTATION, CRUCIAMENTUM, GRAVE MIASMA and MORBID ANGEL come to mind frequently here, which is no surprise, but these guys are smart enough to keep things shifting from slow torture to mid-paced trudge to cyclonic devastation…often within the confines of a single song. Such structuring avoids boredom even when the sound is overly familiar. They also keep the production web-coated and cryptic, with a pure analog touch.
Four of the eleven tracks here are creepy soundscapes that are genuinely eerie instead of boring, although the title track seems to be nothing but the same noise that accompanies the first arrival of the Monolith in “2001: A Space Odyssey”. That leaves 7 cuts full of death metal filth and abyssal vocals. The best of these are the venomous “Forked Tongues”, the two part “Proselyte Pig” cuts and the final doomsday epic of “Among The 72 Embalmed Ekpyrotic Gods”, which INCANTATION themselves would be hard put to better.
If this sort of gross and anti-cosmic death metal sets your heart aflutter, IGNOBLETH will suit you just fine.
