VHS     "Quest For the Mighty Riff"

By Dr. Abner Mality

By Crom's dangling balls, the 80's were a time of flashing steel and unbridled adventure...the Golden Age of sword and sorcery movies. Few who grew up during this era can forget the likes of "Conan The Barbarian", "The Sword and the Sorcerer", "Excalibur" and more. Who better than Canada's death metal nerds VHS to pay tribute to this epic epoch of medieval mayhem?

Thus we have "Quest For the Mighty Riff", punctuated by cheesy narration amd cinematic sounds. The music is VHS' catchy, easy to get into chunky riffs, peppered with plenty of bestial growls, but the difference is that there's something uplifting and even cheerful to the music, instead of the usual glum gut-munching. You can hear it on tracks like "Cleave 'Em and Leave 'Em", "Illias and the Magic Bow", and "Eternia Needs a Hero". Yes, even He-Man gets a song here and it's one of the better ones. The band generally keep things brisk and short, which is good when it comes to this kind of material. Some special guests like Aaren from MOLDER and James from HELLRIPPER join the quest to add their own might.

It's fun and silly stuff. There are a couple of bonus tracks, including a death metal version of BRYAN ADAMS that you have to hear to believe and an insanely happy and upbeat take on the theme from "The Neverending Story". If you don't require your death metal to be completely miserable and horrid, this is a fun album to check out. The Quest is fulfilled!
