When “Love Drive” is not enough, you need “Love Overdrive”! And TOTAL MANIAC from Baltimore are here to oblige. Now they don’t sound much like SCORPIONS nor do they resemble WARHAMMER (who did a song called “Total Maniac”). What they do sound like is dirty, unwashed rock n’ roll injected with speed and a stance screaming of zero fucks given.
There is a strong punky feeling and even traces of STOOGEy sleaze rock, but the main odor I smell is MOTÖRHEAD, MIDNIGHT and ZEKE. It’s enough to make your eyes water and your ears bleed. They come out swinging fast and hard with the title track and “Devil In Plain Sight”, both full of speed rock swagger. The voice of Diamond Dustin is nothing to write home about and seems rather plain, but he does have the necessary “don’t give a shit” tone. “Just Another” slows things up just a tad and then the album slows down to more of a blues grind on “Drinking Our Way To Hell”, “Early Grave” and “Rock N Roll”. I swear I have heard a hundred bands play the riff to “Early Grave” but nobody expects originality from this kind of stuff.
They accelerate once more to end the album with “Set Fire To The Sun” and “Flatline” and I must say I prefer the faster tracks to the more mid-paced ones. This is a record to get your mind off the dangers of AI and the tragedy of a nation headed to the landfill of history and it performs that mission pretty well. Light ‘em up!
