By Dr. Abner Mality
I don’t know if my fur loincloth fits me anymore, but I’m encouraged to put it on after listening to the barbaric attack of THE CIMMERIAN. As heavy as Crom’s iron balls and as gritty as a pack of Hyrkanian mercenaries, this is metal that makes you want to drink, whore and cut throats!
A trio from California, there’s nothing really eye-opening about THE CIMMERIAN’s brand of metal...they owe a LOT to HIGH ON FIRE with their mix of doom and thrash. In fact, when you hear “Neck Breaker of the Mountains” and “Silver And Gold”, it’s hard to think about anybody else. But fans of GATES OF SLUMBER should also really dig what’s going on here. And if you’re lucky enough to know of Spain’s cult warriors IRONSWORD, you will really enjoy THE CIMMERIAN’s tales of beasts, barbarians and bloody mayhem.
They get lyrical inspiration not only from the immortal Conan, but also the works of Michael Moorcock and movies like “Deathstalker” and “Fire And Ice”. These guys are even more sword and sorcery than HIGH ON FIRE (although nobody beats IRONSWORD in that regard). That “barbaric” feeling echoes through every note here, whether in high speed thrashers like “Darkwolf” and “Black Coast Tigress” or thunderous doom like “Deathstalker” or the 10 minute plus epic “Monarch”. The gruff biker vocals also fit the material like a trusted sword in a warrior’s hand.
Sometimes you just need to go out and cave in skulls with a battle axe. For times like that, there is THE CIMMERIAN. Now where did I put my furry boots?
