MORTEM has a legacy that goes way back to the days of early Norwegian black metal with Dead and Euronymous being enthusiasts, and members of ARCTURUS in the fold. Of course, Hellhammer is on drums here, lending a greatness to the project's backbone and overall credentials. The music sounds old school black metal, surely, with melodic touches in the music and some eerie keys.
Often in the early Norse scene one could hear a touch of death metal in the guitar arrangements, and at times it seems touched upon here. It is nearly like hearing the old demo style retained in the format of an album, as if something is kept over from those early days- simple, same, keeping the fire and such, and not getting out of that era. I wonder if I could've even guessed anything unusual or legendary was going on without having read the promo? Steinar Johnsen of ARCTURUS fame lends his personal touch here with the keys which is a deep atmosphere that puts a certain feeling; a certain stir of the air that says Fall is coming to make aflame the colors and send a chill to the night again. And soon then, the wintry breath of death frosts the air...that old feeling. It seems the band look to stir these sorts of airs, and haven't done a terrible job in doing it.This album is not the usual affair in this age with its kind. I will look forward to revisiting it one wintry night.
