GALVANIST is the type of band that likes to take you on a journey. In this case, it’s a journey into the interstellar void and in a way, also into the void between human beings. This is a group in the tradition of BLUT AUS NORD, NEUROSIS and BELL WITCH…often doomy, usually cosmic and always heavy.
They don’t hit the sweet spot 100% of the time, but when they do find it, they hit it hard. The best track comes first. A pointless intro “Bornless” leads into the mammoth “Atrophy”, where it is obvious the band is not afraid of some good old cacophony…this is some face-ripping death that slowly mutates into some excellent cosmic doom complete with BLUT AUS NORD synths adding atmosphere. Killer track! “Dreich” is even longer and hits more of a traditional post metal sound alternating introspection with colossal heaviness. The vocalist’s range is quite vast, going from feral screams and growls to sad, low key tones.
“Hauntology” is wild and fierce for most of its length, mixing black and death metal pretty well but also retaining a kind of weirdness that keeps things interesting. That kind of deserts GALVANIST with the last and unfortunately longest track “Spiorad”, which struck me as pretty typical post metal with its pendulum like swings. The piano section at the end was quite pretty, though.
Interesting band here that mixes up styles pretty well. I don’t think they have everything figured out quite yet, but they’re definitely worthy of further study.
