Hillbilly music and pop country aren’t the only things coming out of Nashville these days. It’s also the home of these rude and crude death metallers, who made a real positive impression on me with their last album “Infernal Ordinance”. On “Profane Altar”, they continue their filthy barrage of primitive, catchy death metal in the vein of CIANIDE and early BOLT THROWER.
With ACT OF IMPALEMENT, the SLIME is paramount! Whether volcanically fast or painfully slow, there’s a feeling of ooze that coats all the songs here. If you’re familiar with ROTPIT, these guys may be considered an American analogue to that. The subhuman growls also fit this unholy assault to a T.
I found perverse enjoyment in all eight of these odiferous odes, but “Deities of the Weak” was just a total warhead of a song, blasting forth with almost grindcore intensity. “Gnashing Teeth” plods ahead with a sickening CIANIDE-like groove, which is right in my comfort zone, while the title track emphasizes the death-doom side of the band, drawing upon slower INCANTATION for inspiration.
ACT OF IMPALEMENT have got their turf staked out (pun intended) and are ready to haul your carcass up and then drop it on the sharp end of “Profane Altar”!
