Spinning an epic doom web over the end of 2024 we have CAPILLA ARDIENTE hailing from Santiago Chile. Conjuring up themes of doom, anti-religion, inner knowledge and alchemy are Felipe Plaza Kutzbach on vocals, Julio Borquez on guitar, Igor Leiva on guitar, Claudio Botarro Neira on bass and Francisco Aguirre on drums. Be warned these guys present us with an epic heavy doom offering with their latest album “Where Gods Live And Men Die”.
Scaling heights and lengths with musical leanings to many notable peers like MANOWAR, DREAM THEATER, BLACK SABBATH, CANDLEMASS and especially SORCERER. There are many others along those musical lines I could mention, but alas this is about CAPILLA ARDIENTE not those mentioned. They are just a point of reference giving an idea of what you may expect to hear.
Expectation of “Where Gods Live And Men Die” would be pretty high then with peers like those mentioned above. CAPILLA ARDIENTE do not miss that mark, but do try to exceed it at times. With that said, I will not break down the album track by track as there are only four tracks with only the last one clocking in under ten minutes. Suffice to say expect to be scorched and scorched again. Even though I cannot say I have a favorite, they all kick ass and are too long to focus on just one.
With each track almost an extension of the previous one I could see this album played as one track. Ups and downs throughout evoke different emotions. It reminds me of how DREAM THEATER's “Twelve Steps Suite” clocking in at fifty-five minutes. Storytelling takes your emotions on a ride. It is the same kind of thing CAPILLA ARDIENTE achieve with “Where Gods Live And Men Die” leaving you wanting more, and that shows their depth.
In closing, the band's name translates to "Burning Chapel" which is the place where the deceased receive their funeral (namely, their house, a church or any other specific place), usually lighted by many funeral candles (thanks to the Metal Archives). They succeed in setting our ears ablaze through a journey of "personal loss, wounds from the youth, disease and the need to overcome and transcend by willpower" as stated by bass player Claudio Botarro Neira. Light a candle, let the needle drop, sit back, absorb the soundscapes and let the record spin.
